Honoring the Past, Shaping the Future: the Prince George Chamber celebrates 115 years

A major milestone has been achieved by the Prince George Chamber of Commerce.

The organization is celebrating its 115th anniversary with an open house tomorrow (Wednesday).

The Fort George Board of Trade was federally registered through the Boards of Trade Act on Oct. 21, 1911, three-and-a-half years before the founding of the City of Prince George.

The Fort George Board of Trade changed its name to the Prince George Board of Trade in 1915 after the
city was incorporated and then became the Prince George Chamber of Commerce in 1961.

“Even before there was a local government, a group of area business leaders founded a business association because they believed in themselves, they believed working together benefitted everyone, and they believed in the promising future of this community,” Prince
George Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Neil Godbout said in a release.

“That commitment is carried on to this day and going forward through the members who volunteer to
serve on the Chamber’s board of directors and oversee a staff of three full-time employees.”

The local chamber assists 530 members with benefits for their businesses, special events like the annual Business Excellence Awards and True North Business Development Forum, and political advocacy at all levels of government.

Mayor-elect Garth Frizzell will become the fifth person in Prince George history to have served terms as both Chamber president and the city’s mayor, joining John Morrison, Alex Patterson and the first two mayors of Prince George – William Gillett and Harry Perry.

Tomorrow’s (Wednesday) open house will be at the Chamber’s office at 1564 7th Avenue from 2 to 4 pm.
