Lheidli T’enneh and Legion invite community to commemorate National Indigenous Veterans Day

The Lheidli Tenneh First Nation is inviting the community to recognize National Indigenous Veterans Day.

National Indigenous Veterans Day is observed annually on November 8, and was established through the efforts of Indigenous veterans seeking recognition for their service and experiences.

“National Indigenous Veterans Day is an opportunity to honour the courage, service, and sacrifice of Indigenous veterans while also recognizing that many did not return home to the same opportunities, recognition, or support as their fellow soldiers,” said Lheidli T’enneh Chief Dolleen Logan. “Many volunteered to serve a country that did not yet recognize them as equal citizens, and many faced significant barriers when they returned home. By gathering together, we honour their legacy, acknowledge the challenges they faced, and ensure future generations understand both their contributions and their experiences.”

To mark the occasion, the Lheidli T’enneh First Nation and Royal Canadian Legion Branch 43 will be partnering to host a gathering, which will feature drumming, music, recognition of Indigenous veterans, opportunities for reflection and learning, and a shared meal.

“We are grateful to partner with the Legion on this gathering as we work together to honour Indigenous veterans, share their stories, and build greater understanding within our community,” Logan added.

This gathering will take place at the Legion on Sunday, November 8, starting at 11:00 a.m.. Community members are welcome to join, and are encouraged to wear a poppy or beaded poppy.

National Indigenous Veterans Day complements Remembrance Day by creating a dedicated space to honour Indigenous veterans, recognize historical inequities, and ensure their stories and contributions remain part of Canada’s collective memory. The day is not a replacement for Remembrance Day, but an opportunity to highlight experiences which have been overlooked within Canada’s broader story of military service.
