Wind storm knocks out power for thousands in northern B.C.

Thousands of BC Hydro customers in northern B.C. are left without power this evening (Friday) due to strong wind gusts.

According to BC Hydro’s outage map, the northern outages are primarily along Highway 16, spanning from Burns Lake to Prince George.

Earlier today, Environment Canada placed parts of the region under yellow wind warning, bringing wind gusts ranging from 80-100 kilometres an hour, and localized gusts of 100-120 being possible.

The weather service reminds people to stay away from fallen power lines, be prepared to adapt your driving for changing conditions, and prepare for possible disruptions to transportation, services, and utilities.

As of 8:45 p.m., no BC Hydro crews have been assigned to the affected areas.

BC Hydro’s outage map can be found here.
