The UNBC Timberwolves women’s basketball team won’t make the Canada West playoffs this season but according to their head coach no shortage of strides were made during the 2015-16 season.
Despite a 3-15 record, the Timberwolves were in a number of games especially at home against quality opponents who are older and more experienced like Thompson Rivers, UBCO and the University of Fraser Valley, losing by respectable margins.
Shchepotkin says other coaches from around the league are seeing the same thing.
“This year we did a great job in building our program. I have gotten a lot of feedback from other coaches and they are starting to take us more seriously, they are kind of afraid of us.”
While the core consists of Maria Mongomo, Hannah Pudlas, Vasiliki Louka and Kylie Pozniak, the third-year bench boss has also been pleased with the development of first-year player Issy Bourque and third-year post player Emily Asae.
“Issy shows a better game each and every time, I am very happy with what she is doing and has a bright future.”
“Emily is important to our team because she is an energizer who provides a lot of positive energy and is a great teammate. She is also a good rebounder.”
The Lady T-Wolves conclude their season Friday and Saturday in Edmonton against the Grant MacEwan Griffins.
UNBC played Grant MacEwan very tough at home in January losing both games 73-58 and 70-57.
