Snow pack levels below average

Snowpack levels in Northern BC are well below average.

The Nechako River basin is currently at 73% of the normal level at this time of year. The West and East Upper Fraser basins sit at 85% and 77% respectively.

In the west, the Stikine is up to 72% from 52% last month. The Skeena-Nass also saw an increase up to 73% from 62%. Wet weather in February drove those snow packs closer to traditional levels.

But Dave Campbell with the River Forecast Centre says it’s too early to make any big predictions.

“In a normal year we generally see the transition from accumulation to melt happening around about the middle of April, so we have about 6 weeks on average left of accumulation.”

However he says temperatures in Northern BC were 3-5 degrees above normal in February, which could end up leading to a early melting cycle.
