New YMCA-run child care centre to open this fall

The YMCA is still in the design stage of its new child care facility at Lac Des Bois Elementary. CEO Amanda Alexander says the Y plans to go to tender for construction of the Lac Des Bois Family Development Centre soon and should have the facility open by this fall.

“Our priority will be to ensure that our after school programs and pre-school programs, if at all possible, would be ready to go for the beginning of the school year.”

Alexander says plans for the centre include separate rooms for children of different ages.

“The concept is that you’re getting developmentally specific child care – so that’s meeting, say, the specific needs of infant toddlers or 3-5 year olds – but it’s all in one location. So children are able to be near their siblings as well as how great that is for family members dropping off children of different ages.”

The Lac Des Bois Family Development Centre will offer spaces for infants, toddlers and pre-schoolers as well as after school care for older children.

Parents interested in registering their children for a spot on a wait list are encouraged to contact the Northern YMCA.
