City monitoring ice build up at Nechako River

The City of Prince George  Nechako River is being monitored heavily by the City of Prince George.

They are watching the boat launch in Cottonwood Island Park about two kilometres upstream from the confluence where the water is flowing through a side channel.

Manager of Public Works Dave Dyer is keeping a close eye on the situation.

“We’re just watching to be sure the water doesn’t go up over the bank and affect our trails especially Cottonwood Island where at this point we’re not seeing any extensive flooding but if we get to a point where the public is at risk, we’ll have to make some decisions on the trails.”

Dyer has a simple message for those wanting to venture out into the area. “Walking on ice is really dangerous, it might look safe but it’s not. Our biggest concern right now is we’ve seen footprints in the snow and on the ice so that’s really concerning to us.”

The situation is being monitored three times a day and at this point no flooded areas have been reported.

The lower two kilometres of the Nechako River has experienced some recent ice build up.
