Warmer weekend to blast out two week cold snap in Prince George

The frigid temperatures that have made Prince George feel like a frozen tundra are coming to an end.

Ross MacDonald with Environment Canada says people should notice a change fairly soon.

“Come kind of Saturday and into Sunday we’ll see a bit of switch into the flow pattern to a more westerly flow off the Pacific and as that happens some milder air will start to flush out the cold Arctic air that has been entrenched for the past two weeks.”

MacDonald adds December has gotten off to a chillier start than normal. “We usually see overnight low’s that dip below minus 20 about four times a month and as it stands right now in the month of December here it has been 10 times.”

Even with the possibility of rain in the forecast next week, MacDonald believes people should not be hitting the panic button just yet. “Most of the precipitation is going to fall as snow, it’s possible as it does warm-up when we see these transitions usually happen it’ll sometimes start as snow and then see it transition over to a wet snow or even mixed rain and snow.”
