The Prince George Cougars took it on the chin losing 7-0 to the Tri-City Americans (Sunday), however, the Cats got a split in their season opening doubleheader on the road. The Cougars beat Portland 6-3 Saturday. The Americans scored five times on the power play as they built up period leads of 3-0 and 7-0. Tri-City outshot P.G. 38-14. The Cougars entertain Kelowna in their home opener on Friday.

–The Prince George Spruce Kings won both of their games at the BCHL Showcase in Chilliwack. The Spruce Kings beat Alberni Valley 6-5 (Sunday) a day after they started their season with a 6-4 victory over Nanaimo (Saturday). Alex Brooks-Potts had 48 saves for the Spruce Kings, who were outshot by Alberni 53-20. The Spruce Kings play Saturday at Coquitlam and Sunday at Surrey with their home opener Oct 3 vs. Chilliwack.

–The Major Midget Cariboo Cougars began the BCMML regular season with a pair of wins on home ice. The Cariboo Cats beat the Valley West Hawks 7-4 (Saturday) and 3-2 (Sunday). Darren Hards had three assists in game two while Steven Jandric tallied a combined four goals in the two games (including a hat trick Saturday). Cariboo will visit the Vancouver NE Chiefs Saturday and Sunday with their next home games against the Vancouver Greater Canadians Oct 4 (4:45pm) and 5 (11:30am) at Kin 1.

–The UNBC Timberwolves lost to the Fraser Valley Cascades in a pair of Canada West soccer doubleheaders. Fraser Valley beat the UNBC men 2-1 (Saturday) and 3-1 (Friday). The Cascades outscored the Lady Timberwolves 3-0 (Saturday) and 2-1 (Friday). UNBC is 1-5 in the men’s standings and 0-4-2 in the women’s division. The Timberwolves return to action when they host Victoria Saturday and Sunday at noon and 2:15pm.
