Rookie goalie Gauthier outstanding for Cougars in his hometown

The Prince George Cougars earned four out of a possible six points in three weekend road games in Alberta following a 2-1 shootout loss to the Calgary Hitmen.

Earlier, they beat the Red Deer Rebels 4-1 (Saturday) and dropped a 5-4 decision to the Edmonton Oil Kings (Friday) in a shootout.

Sunday afternoon in Calgary, the Hitmen outshot the Cats 40-34.

Taylor Gauthier, who was playing before many friends and family members in his hometown, made 39 saves over 65 minutes.

“Very very impressive, but not surprised. When your 16-year-old is performing like that, it is fun to watch,” said Cougars Director of Player Development Nick Drazenovic on 94.3 the GOAT’s post-game show.

The Hitmen won the shootout 3-2.

Carolina Hurricanes 2016 first-round (13th overall) draft pick, Jake Bean, notched the winner in the fifth round of the shootout.

Tristen Nielsen scored for Calgary in the first period and Josh Curtis replied for Prince George, with his first goal of the season, early in the second.

The Cougars were 0/10 on the power play, while the Hitmen were zero-for-seven with the man advantage.

“We got a point and it was a good road trip through Alberta,” stated Drazenovic.

The 4-5-2-2 Cougars will continue on the road when they visit Vancouver Friday and Kelowna Saturday.

All three teams are tied for second place in the BC Division, although the Giants and the Rockets have played one less game.
