Thanksgiving Dinner a chance for nutrition and safety

While many people may be dreading or anticipating all the Thanksgiving food to be consumed this weekend, Northern Health has some tips to lessen any worries. Registered Dietician Lise Luppens says when it comes to nutrition, Thanksgiving meals have great potential.

“Usually we see things like ham or turkey, or vegetables, buns, stuffing, desserts.” says Luppens, “and in doing that you have a good chance of having all four food groups present which is how we define a balance meal.”

Luppens says to maybe offer locally grown foods as well. Environmental Health Officer Catherine Sun says when it comes to food safety, salmonella is something to be cautious about.

“Poultry, such as turkey are prone to have those bacteria,” says Sun, “so if you happen to have bought or cooked a contaminated turkey you could become seriously ill so that includes diarrhea, vomiting or sometimes death.”

Sun says to make sure your turkey is cooked to 85 degrees Celsius before eating it.
