PRINCE GEORGE SPRUCE KINGS:

Penticton Vees         4        Prince George Spruce Kings          1

The Vees tallied twice in the second and two more in the third after PG’s Ben Poisson opened the scoring early in the middle period, before just 656 fans at the RMCA.

Penticton outshot Prince George 36-25.

The 27-9-2-3 Vees move into second place in the Interior Division, four points behind the Vernon Vipers and one ahead of the Wenatchee Wild.

The 21-13-4-4 Spruce Kings are in a three-way tie for first in the Mainland Division alongside Langley and Surrey.

The Spruce kings host the 29-10-1-4 Vipers tonight and the 21-13-4-4 Powell River Kings on Sunday.

MAINLAND DIVISION STANDINGS:

Prince George, 43 games = 21-14-4-4 (50 points)
Langley, 43 games = 19-12-10-2 (50 points)
Surrey, 44 games = 22-16-4-2 (50 points)
Chilliwack, 42 games = 20-17-2-3 (45 points)

PRINCE GEORGE COUGARS:

The Prince George Cougars have a home doubleheader against the Lethbridge Hurricanes tonight and Saturday.

The Lethbridge roster includes former PG Cougars Brad Morrison and Tate Olson.

Morrison has four goals and five assists in five games since joining the Hurricanes.

Olson has a goal and 11 assists in 33 games.

The 21-19-4 Hurricanes are second in the Central Division and 4-0-1 in their last 5 games

The 17-22-4-3 Cougars are eight points behind Spokane for the final wild-card playoff spot.

CARIBOO COUGARS:

The Cariboo Cougars battle the 10-11-1-3 Vancouver NE Chiefs in Fort St. James Saturday at 5PM and Sunday at 10AM.

The 19-5-2 Major Midget Cougars are in second place with 14 regular season games remaining, four points behind the 21-3-2 Valley West Hawks and two ahead of the 18-6-1-1 Fraser Valley Thunderbirds.

 

NHL:

Vancouver Canucks centre Bo Horvat has re-joined the team and is expected back in the lineup soon.

The 22-year-old, who has 20 points (10 goals) in 28 games, has been out since fracturing his foot on December 5th.

Vancouver is 4-11-2 in his absence.

The 18-21-6 Canucks visit Edmonton Saturday and Winnipeg Sunday.

UNBC TIMBERWOLVES:

The UNBC Timberwolves visit the Victoria Vikes tonight and Saturday in Canada West basketball.

The Lady Timberwolves are 8-8 and in ninth place out of 17 teams while the UNBC men are 11th with a 7-9 record.

Victoria is 10-4 (women) and 8-6 (men).

The top 12 qualify for the playoffs.

UNBC wraps up the regular season January 26th and 27th at home against Fraser Valley.

 

WORLD CUP BIATHLON:

Sarah Beaudry of Prince George placed 87th out of 103 in a World Cup biathlon women’s 7.5-kilometre sprint in Antholz-Aneterselva, Italy.

The 23-year-old Beaudry, who has qualified for the Olympics, was second of three Canadians in the field.

 

NBA:

For the second straight year, Toronto Raptors guard DeMar DeRozan will be a starter in the NBA All-Star game.

He’s averaging 25.2 points per game.

The Raptors host the San Antonio Spurs tonight.

The 30-13 Raptors are 2nd in the Eastern Conference, 2 1/2 games behind Boston, while the 30-16 Spurs are third in the Western Conference.

NFL:

The New England Patriots and the Minnesota Vikings are favoured in the NFL Conference championship games on Sunday.

The Patriots are a seven-and-a-half point pick against the visiting Jacksonville Jaguars (12:05PM) in the AFC, while the Vikings are three-point favourites on the road against the Philadelphia Eagles (3:40PM) in the NFC.
