NHL: (Canadian teams went 3-1)

Aleksander Barkov scored twice, including the winner late in the second and an empty netter in the third.

Jacob Markstrom made 37 saves for the (21-26-6) Canucks who continue a four game road trip Thursday against the league-leading Lightning in Tampa.

Vancouver will also play Friday in Carolina and Sunday in Dallas.

Canucks are second last in the Western Conference, 15 points out of a playoff spot with 29 games left.

PRINCE GEORGE COUGARS:

The Prince George Cougars have five home games in February, three of them on the long weekend.

The Cougars entertain the Kamloops Blazers Friday and Saturday at 7PM and the Red Deer Rebels Monday afternoon at 2PM.

The (19-27-4-4) Cougars are six points behind the Blazers and 13 points out of a playoff spot.

PRINCE GEORGE SPRUCE KINGS:

The Prince George Spruce Kings play their next three games at home before closing the regular season with five on the road.

The (27-15-4-4) Spruce Kings host the last place Coquitlam Express on Friday and Saturday.

The Spruce Kings enjoy the Mainland Division lead by seven points over the Surrey Eagles and by eight over the Langley Rivermen.

Surrey lost 8-2 Tuesday night in West Kelowna.

The Spruce Kings can clinch first place by winning five of their last eight.

MAINLAND DIVISION STANDINGS:

Prince George, 50 games = 27-15-4-4 (62 points)
Surrey, 50 games = 24-19-5-2 (55 points)

CARIBOO COUGARS:

The Cariboo Cougars host the (8-18-0-4) Kootenay Ice Saturday afternoon at 4 and Sunday morning at 10 at Kin 1 in their final home games of the regular season.

Kootenay is three points out of a playoff spot.

The (24-5-3-0)  Cougars, who will close with six on the road, are in first place by two points over the (23-4-2-1) Valley West Hawks, although Valley West has two games in hand.

 

UNBC TIMBERWOLVES:

The Canada West basketball playoffs tip off this week.

The UNBC Timberwolves play Thursday (4PM and 6PM Pacific) in Winnipeg against the Wesmen (women followed by the men).

The winner advances to the quarter-finals; the teams have not met this season.

Both the UNBC and Winnipeg men finished 10-10, while the Lady Timberwolves were 9-11 and the Winnipeg women ended up 14-6.

 

NBA:

The (37-16) Raptors are just a game behind the first place (39-16) Celtics in the Eastern Conference.

 

OLYMPICS:

The opening ceremonies at the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic Winter Games will be held on Friday.

Megan Tandy of Prince George has her first Biathlon race on Saturday in the Women’s 7.5km Sprint.

 

NFL:

In a stunner, Josh McDaniels has back out of a deal to become the head coach of the Indianapolis Colts.

On the same day the Colts announced his hiring, McDaniels changed his mind, deciding to remain with the New England Patriots as their offensive co-ordinator.

Indianapolis is only NFL team in need of a head coach.
