Bethune, O’Brien head south after signing amateur tryout contracts

A couple of Prince George Cougars, who had their WHL career end on the weekend, will continue to play this season in the ECHL, which is one Tier below the AHL.

Forwards Jared Bethune and Brogan O’Brien have signed amateur tryout contracts with the Allen Americans and the Kansas City Mavericks respectively.

Bethune, the team MVP, led the Cougars in scoring with 69 points (21G, 48A) in 71 games.

Allen (Texas) is the ECHL affiliate of the San Jose Sharks.

O’Brien played his entire minor and junior hockey career in his hometown of Prince George.

He notched 17 goals and 41 points in 52 games with the Cougars this season, capped off with a three-point performance, including two goals, in Saturday’s 6-5 shootout loss to the Kamloops Blazers.

Kansas City is the ECHL affiliate of the Calgary Flames.
