Work is now underway on the Willow Cale Road Bridge over Haggith Creek.
The bridge was originally closed in September 2017 after unstable ground beneath the south foundation was discovered.
“In the original construction of the bridge, we found some movement that was happening once the old culvert was removed. We had to go back in and place five metres of fill to help stabilize the area. So now that has been settled all over the winter and we haven’t seen any more movement,” explains City Engineer Adam Homes.
“Cranes are being erected and once that crane is erected we’re going to put in two new piles, from those piles we’ll build the pier, and that will brace the south side of the bridge. Then we will remove the abutment, that will release the tension that’s on the bridge, then we will reset the bridge and move over to the north abutment and begin repairs there.”
The original bridge had a budget of just under three million dollars.
The current detour will remain in place until repairs are finished, expected to be about three months, with the road reopening this summer.
