New electoral areas established within School District 57

The next school trustree election in October will see some new blood in the system.

A trustee in the Mackenzie area and another in the Robson Valley will be added to School District 57 in addition to the remaining five trustees to be elected in Prince George.

It will be nice to see the rural portion of the district finally represented according to SD 57 Board Chair Tim Bennett.

“We currently have about 600 students living and attending school in Mackenzie and we have about 400 and 600 students in the Robson Valley.”

However, there will be a cost associated with the positions.

“Costs would include reimbursing trustees for travel to Prince George for meetings, accommodations if needed and ensuring there is technology in place to ensure to video conference in effectively.”

The application was approved by the Ministry of Education on Wednesday.

The vote is slated for Saturday, October 20th and Bennett hinted on the type of people, which could fit the bill.

“We’re looking for individuals who are passionate about advocating for public education, the BC Schools Trustee Association has a really great document about the role of the trustee and what it takes to be a trustee.”

“At this point, we now know the ministry’s decision and we have a bunch of work ahead of us to ensure that we are ready to elect those trustees to the board in October.”

The District of Mackenzie began this initiative back in 2014 and has been in partnership with the Robson Valley, the Regional District of Fraser-Fort George and School District 57.
