Prince George golfers to tee it high and let it fly this weekend

Well, it’s time to dust off the clubs and hit the fairways as Prince George’s golfing season kicks off on Saturday.

The Prince George Golf and Curling Club will be the first full-length course to open in the Northern capital after a long winter.

This year’s opening isn’t quite as early as years past says Doug Rickbeil who works at the pro shop.

“Our greens are awesome, they look great, the tee boxes are wonderful and our fairways will take the normal time to grow in but we have been pretty fortunate the last couple years to have early openings but this is closer to the norm if you look back over the last ten or fifteen years.”

He says the extra snow actually helped the golf course.

“The snow definitely does help to insulate the grass and protect it over the course of the winter. The biggest thing that helped was that we didn’t have the freeze-thaw cycle that we seemed to have over the last few years, which creates some thick ice and does some damage to the turf.”

Rickbeil is looking forward to seeing some familiar faces along with golfers from other clubs.

“Some of the members of Aspen and Aberdeen show up here because they are not open as early as us but what we are looking for is that the Prince George Golf and Curling Club are open for business and it’s a public course.”

Tee times have already been filled for opening day but there are still a few spots left for Sunday.

Pine Valley Par-Three Golf Course has been open since last week.
