93-year-old temperature record could fall today in Prince George

It could be a record-setting day here in Prince George.

The recent heat wave we’ve been experiencing will go up a couple notches today with even more sunshine.

It should come down to the wire says Environment Canada Meteorologist Alyssa Charbonneau.

“Our forecast high is 28 degrees, now if I go back and look at the historical record it is 27.8 degrees set back in 1925.”

The 93-year-old mark was set on this date and could be eclipsed by Tuesday’s projected high.

“That record goes back quite a way and if we go back to our high of 28, we will just, just beat it. We will be watching closely through the afternoon as it will get very close but is definitely not without a shot today.”

However, the downside to these above-normal temperatures could intensify the risk of flooding in the northern capital.

Prince George is currently under a High Stream Flow Advisory, which could be upgraded to a Flood Watch from the province’s River Forecast Centre any time in the next two weeks.

Some rain could be in the cards for Wednesday, which could further complicate matters,

“It has been very hot as we have been under a strong ridge of high pressure and as we go into tomorrow we are looking at a bit of a transition with the ridge weakening just enough to allow some of the instability to release and this happens with showers often scattered in the afternoon and the risk of thunderstorms could take place into the evening as well. It’s a 30% chance and we’re thinking it might go southeast.”

Eleven temperatures along Vancouver Island and the Lower Mainland set new temperature records on Mothers Day with several more set on Monday.
