Canada’s Under-18 hockey team  4  Slovakia  2

Taylor Gauthier of the Prince George Cougars made 17 saves as Canada outshot Slovakia 58-19.

Canada continues preliminary-round play in Pool A against Sweden tonight at 6 (PT).

Both teams are 2-0.

Nolan Maier of the Saskatoon Blades will likely be in the Canadian net.

Maier had a 15-save shutout in Canada’s 10-0 tournament-opening victory over Switzerland.

There are 22 players on the Canadian team, 11 of them from the WHL.

Saskatoon Blades head coach Mitch Love of Quesnel is one of the Canadian assistant coaches.

 

MIKITA-BLACKHAWKS:

Hockey Hall of Famer Stan Mikita has passed away. He was 78.

Mikita spent his entire 22-year NHL career with Chicago, helping the Blackhawks win the 1961 Stanley Cup.

He had been in poor health after being diagnosed with a brain disorder.

Mikita is the Blackhawks franchise’s career leader in assists (926), points (1,467) and games played (1,394), and is second to former teammate Bobby Hull with 541 goals.

 

JARED YOUNG:

Jared Young of Prince George is the Chicago Cubs minor league Player of the Month for July.

It is the second straight month he has captured the honor.

The 23-year-old Young is batting .307 with 14 homers and 67 RBI’s in 94 games this season between South Bend and Myrtle Beach.

In 25 games with Myrtle Beach, his first stint at the High-A Level, he is batting .289 with four homers and 14 RBI’s.

Named a mid-season Midwest League All-Star, Young has appeared in 66 games at first base, 17 games in left field and two games at second base this season.

He was selected by the Cubs in the 15th round of the 2017 Draft out of Old Dominion University.

 

MLB:

Boston Red Sox  10  Toronto Blue Jays  7  (10 innings)

The (51-61) Blue Jays are 0-1 on a six-game homestand that continues tonight against Boston.

The (80-34) Red Sox have reached 80 wins in just 114 games to lead the Majors.

The (65-49) Seattle Mariners, coming off Tuesday’s 11-4 loss to the Texas Rangers, are two games back of the Oakland A’s for the final AL wild-card spot.

RHYTHMIC GYMNASTICS:

Michaela Samsonoff of Prince George placed second all-around in level 3 in Rhythmic Gymnastics at the Special Olympics 2018 National Summer Games in Nova Scotia.

Samsonoff’s performance included a gold in the Ball and a gold in the Ribbon.

Danielle Cavenaile of PG took a bronze in level 3 Clubs.

 

UNBC TIMBERWOLVES:

The UNBC Lady Timberwolves have added midfielder Jenna Wild to their lineup for the Canada West soccer season, which begins September 8th at UBC Okanagan.

The 20-year-old Wild played youth with a number of current Timberwolves and graduated from Pacific Christian School in Victoria in 2016.

She has been participating in preseason training camp with the team after being away from the game at a competitive level for the last two years.

 

CFL:

The 2-4 B.C. Lions are last in the CFL West one-third of the way into their season.

The Lions host the 5-2 Edmonton Eskimos Thursday night at 7 to start week nine.

The 100th PGA Championship tees off Thursday in St. Louis.

Justin Thomas is the defending champion.

World #1 Dustin Johnson is the 10/1 favorite followed by Rory McIlroy at 12/1 and Thomas at 14/1.

Jordan Spieth is 16/1 while Tiger Woods sits at 20/1.

If Spieth wins the tournament, he becomes the sixth golfer to complete the career grand slam.
