Air quality relief expected later this week

There was a bit of a break on the air quality index for Prince George Monday. The most recent BreezoMeter index is currently showing 95 (as of 5:28pm Monday, August 20), while it was over 200 as recent as last Friday.

That trend is expected to continue as long as winds continue to push smoke away from the city. On Tuesday, PG could just miss another blanket of smoke.

“Some of the smoke from the fires out west will blow towards Prince George,” explains Air Quality Meteorologist Ben Weinstein, saying it could veer slightly north.

“I’m not too sure exactly if Prince George is going to get hit with a big puff of smoke again like in the past couple days or if it will wrap around the north side and keep [Prince George] clear again.”

It feels like ages since PG residents were not dealing with an air quality advisory due to wildfire smoke. Weinstein says relief could come soon.

“There’s a trough that is going to break down that strong ridge and it should bring a bit of relief to air quality later this week.

“How much, I can’t say just yet but I don’t think you’ll be seeing as orange or dark skies as [Prince George] did last week.”
