PRINCE GEORGE COUGARS:

The Prince George Cougars began their season by picking up one out of a possible four points.

The Cougars lost both games to the hometown Victoria Royals; 2-1 in a shootout and 5-1.

The Cougars allowed two shorthanded goals in the opening period and then gave up three power play goals in the final two periods.

Ethan Browne scored the only goal for Prince George, who were outshot 33-29.

Taylor Gauthier took the loss in net while ex-Cariboo Cougar Griffen Outhouse picked up the win.

The 0-1-0-1 Cougars will play their next three games against the 0-2 Rockets; Wednesday in Kelowna, plus Friday (home opener), and Saturday in Prince George.

Victoria Royals  2  Prince George Cougars  1  (Shootout Friday)

Dino Kambeitz scored the only goal in the shootout, in the fifth round.

The Royals forced overtime when Brandon Cutler beat Taylor Gauthier with just 67 seconds left in regulation time.

Josh Maser gave Prince George a 1-0 lead at 4:49 of the third.

Gauthier made 33 saves while Griffen Outhouse blocked 28 for the Royals.

PRINCE GEORGE SPRUCE KINGS:

The Prince George Spruce Kings lead the BCHL with a 5-1 record after splitting their two games at the league Showcase in Chilliwack.

A 4-0 loss to West Kelowna was followed by a 3-2 victory over the Penticton Vees.

All BCHL teams have suffered at least one loss and have posted at least one win through three weekends of the season.

The Spruce Kings play their next three games on the Lower Mainland: Friday in Surrey, Saturday in Langley and Sunday in Coquitlam.

Ben Brar scored twice for the third time in six games for the 5-1 Spruce Kings.

Nicholas Poisson snapped a 2-2 tie at 8:27 of the third.

Logan Neaton made 28 saves as Penticton outshot Prince George 30-26.

West Kelowna Warriors  4  Prince George Spruce Kings  0 (Thursday)

Ex-Cariboo Cougar Mason Richey scored one of the goals for West Kelowna, who tallied once in the first and three more in the second.

 

CARIBOO COUGARS:

(BC Major Midget League) Opening weekend of the regular season

The 1-0-1 Major Midget Cougars visit the Vancouver NE Chiefs Saturday at 4:30 and Sunday morning at 11:30 in Burnaby.

 

NHL: (Exhibition)

The Vancouver Canucks play their fifth of seven exhibition games tonight against the L.A. Kings in Salt Lake City.

The Canucks are 1-3 in the pre-season.

 

UNBC TIMBERWOLVES:

UNBC Timberwolves  1  Calgary Dinos  0  (Sunday)

Michael Henman scored the goal and Rob Goodey made six saves for the Timberwolves who posted their third straight shutout victory.

The 3-1-2 UNBC men, who are second in the Pacific Division, play their next game Thursday at 5 p.m. in Victoria against the 3-3-3 Vikes in a make-up game.

They also visit the 7-0-1 UBC Thunderbirds Friday night at 6:30 and Sunday afternoon at 1.

UNBC Timberwolves  1  Lethbridge Pronghorns  0  (Friday)

T-Wolves captain Francesco Bartolillo scored on a penalty kick in the 17th minute, his fourth goal of the season and the team record 14th of his career.

(Canada West Women’s Soccer) 

The UNBC women’s soccer team lost both of its weekend road games by a goal; 2-1 against Fraser Valley and 4-3 against Trinity Western.

Trinity Western Spartans  4  UNBC Lady Timberwolves  3  (Saturday in Langley)

Madison Emmond, Sofia Jones and Julia Babicz tallied for UNBC, who trailed 2-0, 3-1 and 4-2.

The 1-3-2 Lady Timberwolves will host the 5-2 UBC Thunderbirds Friday night at 6 and the 4-3 Victoria Vikes Sunday at noon at Masich Place.

The UNBC women are 7th out of eight in the Pacific Division where the top six teams make the playoffs.

Paige Payne scored the only goal for UNBC.

The Bills, a 17-point underdog, pulled off the biggest NFL upset in 23 years.

The Monday night game to conclude week three of the NFL season has the 0-1-1 Pittsburgh Steelers at the 2-0 Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The Bucs are one of four unbeaten teams along with 3-0 Kansas City, Miami, and the LA Rams.

The Steelers are one of four winless teams along with 0-3 Houston, Oakland, and Arizona.

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo suffered a serious knee injury in the 38-27 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs.

Niners coach Kyle Shanahan said the fear is that Garoppolo suffered an ACL injury which would likely end his season.

B.C. receiver Bryan Burnham caught his second touchdown of the game from Jonathan Jennings, and then made a successful two-point convert reception on the final play of regulation time to force overtime.

Ty Long made a 39-yard field goal in overtime to give the Lions the victory.

GOLF:

Tiger Woods has his first victory on the PGA Tour in five years since the 2013 Bridgestone Invitational.

The 42-year-old Woods captured the TOUR Championship in Atlanta with a score of 11-under, two strokes better than runner-up Billy Horschel.

It was the 80th PGA Tour win, two short of the career record held by Sam Snead.

Woods has improved his ranking to No. 13 in the world.

 

MLB: (Just seven days left in the regular season)

Tampa Bay Rays  5  Toronto Blue Jays  2

The (71-85) Blue Jays are 2-2 on a seven-game homestand, which continues tonight, Tuesday and Wednesday against the AL West leading Houston Astros.

The Jays will wrap up their year with a three-game series in Tampa starting on Friday.

Entering the final week of the MLB regular season, the LA Dodgers lead the Colorado Rockies by 1 1/2 games in the NL West while the Chicago Cubs are 2 1/2 in front of the Milwaukee Brewers in the NL Central.

The Brewers hold down the first-card spot by two games over the St. Louis Cardinals and the Cards lead the second and final wild-card position by 1 1/2 games over Colorado.

Tonight, Milwaukee is at St. Louis, Colorado hosts Philadelphia, the Dodgers visit Arizona, and the Cubs entertain the Pittsburgh Pirates.
