BC Hydro making progress on switchgear replacement project along 15th Avenue and CN Centre

BC Hydro is doing a maintenance project at the bottom of 15th Avenue, stretching all the way to the agriculture area by the Aquatic Centre and CN Centre.

A piece of switchgear is being replaced by the crown corporation, which is at the end of its lifespan and the new piece of equipment will allow for safer operations and is more reliable.

“Along with improved reliability, it reduces outage times for the customer which is the City of Prince George and the CN Centre, the Aquatic Centre, agricultural grounds and it’s that whole recreational area,” said Bob Gammer, Spokesperson.

He adds it would have been the company’s preference to do the work in the summer, regardless, the upgrades are long overdue.

“It’s a device that is at the end of its lifespan and is used to switch and isolate electrical loads, it is work that will allow us to do safer operations and the new equipment is more reliable.”

“We certainly don’t want to do the work during the winter time but it was just a case of the equipment being ready to go now and we are hoping to have the work completed before Christmas,” explained Gammer.

Drivers are being asked to slow down due to the presence of workers and vehicles present in the area, especially with the weather the way it is.

The reduced speed limit is 30 kilometres per hour.
