Old man winter finally coming out of hibernation: Environment Canada

It may not look like a winter wonderland in Prince George but at least some form of snow is on the way.

Despite a week of above-zero temperatures, old man winter will be making an appearance for the first time in a while.

“Tonight, we are forecasting for the Prince George area periods of snow with accumulations of two to four centimeters and also some winds getting pretty gusty overnight getting to fifty kilometers an hour before getting up to seventy throughout the night,” said Alyssa Charbonneau, Meteorologist with Environment Canada.

So far, it’s been a struggle to get the white stuff as the chilly season has been dominated by plus temperatures making it feel more like spring.

“It’s not getting too warm, some of that snow is likely to stick around but there might be some melting along with it and then in the wake of that we are looking at a bit of break in terms of precipitation through Tuesday night into Wednesday.”

As for how much of it will stick around, Charbonneau says it all depends on the warmer temperatures.

“It’s going to be a game of how much snow falls overnight and how warm it gets during the day. Those daytime highs that we’re looking at are still a couple of degrees above seasonal so it’ll be interesting to see how much sticks around.”

The northern capital is likely to be in a freeze-thaw cycle all week with daily highs reaching as warm as plus three and getting as cold as minus nine.
