Up and down year for CN Centre

There were plenty of highs and lows at the CN Centre in 2018.

It started when Hedley was almost unable to perform in early February due to a massive snowfall. Local labourers and stagehands were unable to make it to the area and trucks with production gear were stuck downtown.

A couple months later was likely the high point for the facility. Cirque du Soleil’s Crystal was hosted in April, boasting seven shows.

“The show actually just started touring last October so we were one of the first cities in the world to have it come through their arena and their community,” said CN Centre Manager Glen Mikkelsen.

“For Cirque du Soleil’s first enterprise putting a show on ice, it was simply dazzling.”

As for a low point for 2018, the failed Brier bid may take the cake. Despite public support, Prince George fell short in its attempt to bring the curling championship to the northern capital.

“We are going to have some discussions as to how we are going to move forward and we look forward to talking to people about that shortly,” Mikkelsen said, before noting a potential need to increase deposits should they make a future bid.

“Curling Canada wants to see a higher level of commitment from ticket buyers which I think we had. Just from their standpoint, they want to see that demonstrated.”

Mikkelsen said a future Brier bid is not out of the question.
