Thief damages donation bin for ill Prince George teen

A charity bin collecting for a local teen battling cancer was damaged and stolen from.

The Prince George Recycling Centre posted video surveillance of a thief breaking into one of their donation bins early on Monday morning.

Ken Ziemer, manager of the centre, said the man basically cut the mechanism that holds the lock onto the bin, which will require hours of welding and repair work to make operational again.

“We’ve had the bins broken into before, and we’ve had the locks broken but we’ve never had anybody vandalize the bin, which is an extra step further and a lot more cost.”

According to Ziemer, the damage done will cost more than the value of the bottles inside the bin, which were being collected for 14 years old Kyra Edgson, who was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia and is currently at the BC Children’s Hospital in Vancouver.

“I think it’s just disgusting that somebody would steal from a charity bin and the money is supposed to be going to a good cause. It’s even more depressing when they damage the bin that we’re just trying to help out the community with,” said Ziemer.

Not to be discouraged, the centre is holding bottle drive this Saturday for Kyra. To get involved, or for more information, you can follow this link.
