Coquitlam Express  3  Prince George Spruce Kings  0

Spruce Kings lead the best-of-seven series 3-1 with game five Thursday in Prince George.

Chase Danol scored all three goals (mid 2nd, early 3rd on a PP and into an empty net).

Clay Stevenson made 31 saves for the shutout before 450 fans in Coquitlam.

Logan Neaton blocked 22 of 24 shots in the P.G. net.

It was just the Spruce Kings second loss in their last 17 overall games.

In the other Mainland Division semi-final series on Tuesday, the Chilliwack Chiefs stayed alive with a 2-1 victory over the Langley Rivermen.

The Rivermen lead 3-1 with game five Thursday in Chilliwack.


WHL: 

The Prince George Cougars have four games left in their season.

The Cougars host the Portland Winterhawks Friday and Saturday plus a home and home against the Blazers; March 15th in Kamloops and the 16th at CN Centre.

The (38-19-3-3) Winterhawks are second in the U.S. Division, five points ahead of Spokane.

The 17-39-5-3 Cougars have lost five straight and 22 of their last 23.

Prince George has dropped its last 12 home games.

The Cats are 1-9-1-1 since general manager Mark Lamb took over as interim head coach.

The Cougars are 19th out of 22 teams in the WHL, three points ahead of Regina.

BC MAJOR MIDGET LEAGUE: 

The Cariboo Cougars will conclude their regular season on the road this weekend.

The Major Midget Cougars visit the 6th place Vancouver North West Hawks Saturday night at 7:30 and Sunday morning at 10:45 in North Vancouver.

The 25-8-5  Cougars are in 3rd place in the 11-team league with two regular season games left, just one point back of both the (25-7-4-2) Vancouver NE Chiefs and the (27-9-1-1) Fraser Valley Thunderbirds.

Fraser Valley will host 10th place North Island while the NE Chiefs entertain the 5th place Thompson Blazers on Saturday and Sunday.

 

BC MINOR MIDGET LEAGUE:

The Cariboo Minor Midget Cougars will visit the second place Fraser Valley Minor Midget Thunderbirds in the best of three semi-final.

Games are scheduled for Friday night at 8:30, Saturday afternoon at 1:30 and if needed, Sunday afternoon at 12:45.

The Cariboo 15-year-olds beat the Greater Vancouver Canadians 5-4 and 5-4 to win the best of three quarter-final series 2-0.


NHL:

Carey Price made 26 saves to tie Jacques Plante for most wins in Habs history with 314.

The 31-year-old Price, from Anahim Lake, got his 314th victory in 611 appearances while Plante had that total in 556 games with the team.

The Canadiens play their next game Thursday in San Jose.

The 27-30-9 Vancouver Canucks host the (41-21-4) Toronto Maple Leafs tonight.

Vancouver also plays at Edmonton Thursday and entertain Vegas on Saturday.

The Canucks have lost four straight to fall nine points behind Minnesota for the final wild-card playoff spot with just 16 games left (11 home and 5 away).

Vancouver is tied with Chicago for 12th in the Western Conference.

The three other Wednesday night NHL games have Calgary at Vegas, St. Louis at Anaheim and
Washington at Philadelphia.

 

CURLING:

Jim Cotter of B.C. lost 9-5 to unbeaten Alberta Tuesday afternoon at the Tim Hortons Brier in Brandon.

Alberta leads Pool B at 5-0 followed by Canada at 4-1 with B.C., Ontario and Nova Scotia tied for third at 3-2.

The top four teams will advance to the Championship Pool.

B.C. is up against (1-4) Northwest Territories today (7:00 a.m. PT) and will also meet Ontario tonight (5:00).

In Pool A, Northern Ontario is 6-0 followed by Wildcard at 5-1. Saskatchewan is third at 4-2 with Manitoba and Yukon tied for fourth at 3-3.

HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL PROVINCIALS:

The Duchess Park 3A boys, D.P. Todd 2A boys and Cedars Christian 1A boys all play their opener today at the provincial high school basketball championships in Langley.

Duchess meets Caledonia (8:30 AM) in the tournament opener.

The 16-team B.C. girls 1A basketball championship also begins today in Abbotsford.

Bulkley Valley Christian of Smithers goes against Khalsa Secondary (8:30 AM) while Nechako Valley of Vanderhoof battles Pemberton Secondary (5:45 PM).

NBA:

Houston Rockets  107  Toronto Raptors  95

Sixth straight win for the (39-25) Rockets.

The (46-19) Raptors are second in the NBA Eastern Conference, 2 1/2 games behind the (48-16) Milwaukee Bucks.

Toronto will visit New Orleans Friday and Miami Sunday.


VOLLEYBALL:

The Prince George 16U Kodiaks girls volleyball team earned silver at a Super Series tournament in Kelowna.

The Kodiaks finished 5-1 with their only loss in the final to the Fraser Valley Blitz 2-0.
