MAJOR MIDGET HOCKEY:

Calgary Buffaloes  5  Cariboo Cougars  2

The Buffaloes lead the best-of-three Major Midget Pacific Regional championship series 1-0.

Calgary erased a 2-1 deficit by scoring late in the second period followed by three unanswered goals in the third.

Game two will be played tonight (6:00 PT) with a third game, if needed, Sunday afternoon (1:00 PT) in Calgary.

The winner advances to Telus Cup midget Canadian championship in Thunder Bay, Ontario April 22-28.

BCHL:

The Prince George Spruce Kings will play the Vernon Vipers for the Fred Page Cup.

The first two games will be played in P.G. at the RMCA on Friday, April 12th and Saturday, April 13th with tickets going on sale Monday morning at 10:00.

The Vipers beat the defending champion Wenatchee Wild 3-1 to capture the Interior Final four games to one.

The Coastal Conference champion Spruce Kings have won nine straight and are 12-1 in the playoffs, outscoring the opposition 51-21.

The Spruce Kings have won 24 of their last 26 overall games and are riding a 15-game home winning streak that dates back to mid-December.

NHL: 

The Montreal Canadiens have been eliminated from the Stanley Cup playoffs.

The Habs were knocked out Friday night when the Columbus Blue Jackets beat the New York Rangers 3-2 in a shootout.

The Blue Jackets earned the final post-season berth as all 16 teams have been decided with one day left in the regular season.

The 35-36-10 Vancouver Canucks wrap up their season this afternoon against the Blues in St. Louis.

Vancouver is 12th in the Western Conference and 23rd in the overall standings.

Curling:

Team Canada, skipped by Kevin Koe, finished third in the round-robin with a 9-3 record at the World Men’s Curling Championship in Lethbridge.

Canada will face Scotland (8-4) in the quarterfinals this morning (8:00 PT).

Koe beat Switzerland 10-3 and the Netherlands 6-5 on Friday to conclude the round robin.

The other quarterfinal has Japan (9-3) against United States (8-4).

Sweden (11-1) and Switzerland (9-3) have advanced to the semifinals.

KELLY CUP:

40 teams in six divisions are competing in the 92nd Kelly Cup men’s bonspiel at the Prince George Golf and Curling Club.

Finals are set for Sunday.

 

UNBC TIMBERWOLVES:

Soccer player Gordon Hall and basketball standout Vasiliki Louka have been named the UNBC Timberwolves top Male and Female Athletes of the Year.

The 3-6 Jays play the 4-3 Indians again today in Cleveland as Toronto continues a 6-game road trip.

NBA:  

Charlotte Hornets  113  Toronto Raptors  111

The (56-24) Raptors host the Miami Heat Sunday and close out the regular season at Minnesota against the Timberwolves on Tuesday.

Raptors will finish second in the NBA Eastern Conference (behind the Milwaukee Bucks) and will face the 7th seeded team in the opening round of the playoffs.
