Although Prince George falls in the lower middle of the Canadian Federation of Independent businesses ranking of communities entrepreneurship, the CFIB says the city is good at attracting younger business owners.
Prince George comes in at 86 out of 125 of Canada’s biggest communities in terms of there entrepreneurship.
Ted Mallett, Vice-President and Chief Economist of the CFIB said youth employment was one of the strongest indicators for the area.
“People operating businesses tend to be on the younger scale. Making us feel there is a good start startup culture in the area. ”
He added where Prince George starts to fall short is business confidence. According to Mallett business confidence has been decreasing in the city.
Melissa Barcellos, Manager of Economic Development for the city said their numbers are showing a different story.
“What we heard is businesses see opportunity locally and are continually investing. Our building permits have been increasing year over year, so the story on the ground does not necessarily line up with what we hear.”
She said the city is going to look deeper into these numbers, adding reports like the one are good because they show cities on where they can improve.
