After a brief delay, it’s back to the bargaining table for Canada Post and the union representing its 55-thousand workers, 200 of which are in the Prince George area.
Talks were held today (Wednesday) with the hopes both sides can finally end their long-standing contract squabble.
Local CUPW 812 President, Nicole Chouinard is hopeful they can reach the finish line after the Air Canada strike was quickly resolved.
“Our meetings that we had scheduled were delayed because we have from what I understand the same federal mediator that went back to the table with Air Canada. So, I am optimistic that it’s been proven and that when both sides are at the table, a collective agreement can be reached.”
Chouinard added CUPE’s unity during the weekend strike with the airline is something they are going to duplicate.
“What CUPE did is amazing and admirable as the solidarity and unity they showed is proof the collective bargaining process works the way it does when government doesn’t intervene for a reason.”
“When CUPE stayed out on the line that was Air Canada’s incentive to get back to the table and they don’t have that when they know the government will intervene.”
The postal service is reviewing the union’s response from today’s meeting, and is seeking further clarification, with future meetings scheduled for Friday and Monday.
The overtime ban remains in full effect.
