RDFFG keeping close eye on Fraser, Nechako rivers

The current higher than normal temperatures in the Prince George area is making the Regional District of Fraser – Fort George keep a close eye on the Fraser River for rising levels.

That, along with the Nechako River, are the only two in the district Emergency Service Coordinator Anita de Dreu says has them concerned. The two listed rivers’ tributaries are also expected to rise as a result.

The RDFFG will be watching the situation closely over Victoria Day long weekend, especially with the recently upgraded flood watch.

“We will have people on call for the weekend. We have areas in the lower elevation that, typically, we do see water in when we’re having a high stream flow advisory and or flood watch,” explains de Dreu.

“We will be monitoring [the Fraser and Nechako Rivers] closely. We also have residents who we’re in direct contact with to receive up to date information.”

The Chilako River (Mud River) had forced an evacuation alert for the Upper Mud River Road area southwest of Prince George earlier this month but water levels are receding. With the exception of a “significant rain event”, that river should remain under control de Dreu says.

All other rivers in the district, according to de Dreu, are seeing a declining trend in water levels.
