John Brink documentary gets greenlit by Telus Storyhive

A local storyteller and filmmaker has his next project all lined up: a 20 minute documentary on Prince George’s John Brink for Telus Storyhive.

Ze Helios will once again be working with a Telus Storyhive grant to bring a northern story to the screen.

“All these crazy things happened to him, and he never gave up. That is what is interesting to me, he never gave up” Helios said about Brink; “He is a fighter.”

John Brink came to Canada from the Netherlands in 1965 with not much more than his suitcase. Now, he is one of BC’s most successful businessmen, starting Brink Forest Products which became the largest secondary lumber manufacturing company in North America.

In 2019, he was awarded the Order of British Columbia, the highest honour the Province can award.

Brink is also a well known philanthropist and a published author.

Telus Storyhive enables creators in communities to develop local stories into ready-for-TV productions that will be available on their YouTube page and for all Telus Optic users.

Helios said his pitch was one of 40 selected by Telus across BC and Alberta – normally 20 stories from each province are selected.

“Storytelling is my forte. I love storytelling” Helios said.

He says there is no production timeline set right now, but the documentary will be out in one year.

This is not the only documentary project highlighting an exceptional community member that Helios would like to do.

“There are a lot of members of this community I want to do stories on. If you see somebody in the community that is making a difference and is helping, we need to appreciate these people” he said.

“Not everybody wants to make a difference, its only a few human beings, and I think they should be appreciated and loved.”
