The Cougars got their first point on the season when Ryan Schoettler scored on a 6-on-4 power-play with 17 seconds left in the third.
Taylor Gauthier stopped 31 of the 33 shots he faced in the PG net.
The Royals have now won 10 consecutive home games vs. the Cougars.

The NHL regular season opens with four games on Wednesday. two of them all-Canadian match-ups.
The Vancouver Canucks visit the Edmonton Oilers (7 Pm PT) and the Ottawa Senators play in Toronto against the Maple Leafs.
Brock Boeser has recovered from a concussion and will be in the Canucks lineup.
Defenceman Brandon Manning of Prince George has been placed on waivers by the Oilers for the purpose of sending him to Bakersfield of the AHL.
The other two opening-night games have the Stanley Cup champion St. Louis Blues hosting Washington and San Jose at Vegas.
