“It’s certainly not just a downtown problem.” : Downtown PG President on drug addiction

The President of Downtown PG is responding to a letter sent out to city staff and Mayor Lyn Hall in regards to Monday’s meeting on downtown issues.

In the letter, the coalition group featuring Downtown PG, the local Chamber of Commerce and the Gateway Business Improvement Association outlined a previous request to appear as a group during the December 16th council meeting.

Eoin Foley said the topic of drug addiction isn’t solely a downtown issue.

“It certainly not just a downtown problem. This is a problem affecting all areas of the city whether it is downtown or the Gateway BIA or any residential neighborhood, people have been noticing increases in property crime.”

“It’s not an issue that’s suddenly gotten drastically worse in recent times, it’s been slowly building throughout our entire community and it’s come to that point in our society but provincially as well.”

Foley also touched on why it’s important the request for the 16th is granted.

“We’re still in the process of following up engagement with some of our members and members of the community as well as putting together some well thought out and researched recommendations for short-term action items and longer-term policy changes we would like to see.”

In addition, the coalition will have someone present at Monday’s meeting but it will not be as a group.

It kicks off at 6:00 from the Council Chambers.
