Winter Games—Thursday, February 19

Team BC has 24 medals (8 gold, 9 silver and 7 bronze) at the Canada Winter Games after racking up three gold, three silver and one bronze in Wednesday’s competition. Quebec leads with 46 medals (17G 12S 17B) followed by Ontario with 30 (12G 9S 9B) and Alberta with 27 (7G 11S 9B).

–Three races, three medals for Emily Dickson in the biathlon. The 17-year-old Dickson, who grew up in Burns Lake and moved to Prince George three years ago, won gold in the 10 km pursuit by less than a second. She earlier captured silver in the 7.5 km sprint and bronze in the 12.5 km individual.

–Both Claire Lapointe and Arthur Roots of PG finished 5th in their biathlon pursuit races. Lapointe shot perfect 20/20. Bobby Kreitz (PG) was 17th. The relays will be held Friday at 10am (women) and 1pm (men).

–Carolina Hiller (PG) was part of the BC female long track speed skating team that earned silver in team pursuit. Carolina wound up 5th in the 500 metres that was won by Sara Spence of Kamloops.

–Nicolas Hiller (PG) was part of the BC male team that ended up 4th in long track speed skating team pursuit. Nicolas came 8th in the 500. Gold went to Jacob Graham (Dawson Creek).

–Long track speed skating continues today in Fort St John with the 1000 metre races in the morning followed by the mass start races in the afternoon.

–Tony Proctor (PG) and Emerie Watson (Quesnel) completed the archery competition with a bronze in compound team mixed.

–BC lost to Saskatchewan 4-3 in a shootout in the women’s hockey quarter-finals. The women’s hockey semi finals today at CN Centre have Quebec against Saskatchewan at 4 p.m. followed by Ontario against Alberta at 7:30. Winners play for gold Friday at 7:35 p.m.

–BC dropped a 7-4 decision to Manitoba in the ringette quarter-finals. Sydney Irving of PG is part of the BC team that will play Saskatchewan today at 11:30 a.m. in the consolation round. The ringette semi-finals today at the Coliseum have Ontario against Quebec at 2 followed by Manitoba against New Brunswick at 4:30 with the
winners to battle for gold Friday at 4:30.

–BC (skipped by Tyler Tardi of Surrey) beat PEI 8-6 to finish 5-0 in the men’s curling round robin. BC advances to the semis tonight at 7. The gold medal game at the PG Golf and Curling Club will go Friday at 5pm.

–BC lost 62-24 to Ontario in wheelchair basketball to finish round robin play 1-3 and out of medal contention. (Avril Harris and Joel Ewert of PG both play on the provincial team). The wheelchair basketball semis today at Duchess Park have Quebec against PEI at 3 followed by Saskatchewan against Alberta at 5.

–Alison Desmarais of Vanderhoof placed 2nd in the short track speed skating 500 metres B final. Callie Swan of PG was third in the H final and UNBC student Madison Pilling of the NWT took first in the G final.

–The short track speed skating 1000 metres goes today at Kin 1 with the Upper Finals at 3:50 p.m.

–Mel Pemble (Victoria) took silver in the para alpine slalom and Leia Hoot (Kamloops) captured silver in the target shooting air rifle event.

–Artistic Gymnastics wraps up today at the Northern Sport Centre with finals at 2pm.

–Target Shooting concludes today at CNC with the air pistol individual finals at 1pm (women) and 2:30 (men).

–Alpine Skiing today at Tabor Mountain features the male and female Ski Cross at 1 p.m.
