NHL:
–19 of the 31 players selected in the first round of the 2020 NHL Draft are Canadians, the most since 1990. Seven are from the WHL.
As expected, the New York Rangers chose high-scoring Rimouski winger and CHL Player of the Year Alexis Lafreniere first overall.
The Los Angeles Kings had the second selection and chose six-foot-four centre Quinton Byfield of the Sudbury Wolves. Byfield became the highest Black player picked in NHL draft history.
The first player from the WHL to be drafted this year was Portland Winterhawks centre Seth Jarvis who went 13th overall to the Carolina Hurricanes.
Kamloops Blazers centre Connor Zary was picked by the Calgary Flames, 24th overall.
The Vancouver Canucks don’t have a selection until the third round today.
Round two will begin this morning at 8:30 (PT).
–Commissioner Gary Bettman says the NHL is focused on a January 1st start to the next season.
NBA:
–The LA Lakers are one win away from capturing their 17th NBA title. LeBron James hooped 28 points and added 12 rebounds and eight assists to lead the Lakers to a 102-96 victory over the Miami Heat. Anthony Davis added 22 points and nine rebounds.
The Lakers lead the Finals 3-1 and can win the championship with a victory in Game 5 on Friday night in Orlando. Kelly Olynyk of Kamloops had four points in just 12 minutes for the Heat.
