HARTLEY’S HART ATTACK – (Vaccination plan at PG Cougars games) August 20, 2021 EDITION 850

It came as no surprise this week that the WHL followed the leads of the Ontario Hockey League and Quebec Major Junior Hockey League and adopted a mandatory COVID-19 vaccination policy.

The Prince George Cougars and the other 21 league teams will need to be fully vaccinated at least two weeks prior to the start of the season, which begins on Friday, October 1st.

This goes for all players, operations staff, office personnel, and officials.

In addition, General Managers, Coaches, Head Scouts, Directors, Player Personnel, Equipment Managers, On and Off-Ice Consultants along with anyone who has contact with players on a regular basis will need to be vaccinated as well.

Andy Beesley is the VP of Business for the Cougars.

This week I asked him several questions on the COVID-19 vaccination topic.

What are the options for fans attending PG Cougars games this season?
Beesley’s Answer:  “The last thing we have heard from the health authorities is to plan for a full season without any particular restrictions in place as of today. Having said that we are also aware of the fact they may give us some guidelines or some restrictions down the road.”

Will fans have to be fully vaccinated to attend Cougars games this season?
Answer: “We are not under any guidelines for vaccinations at this point, however, as in the past whatever the health authorities tell us that we need to do, we will be frontrunners in making sure we honor that.  We are expecting Sept 7 is the next announcement where they are supposed to moving us into phase four and we are expecting to get further guidelines at that time.”

Will fans have to wear masks to Cougars games?
Answer: “To the best of my understanding right now it would be optional. What we (Cougars) want to do is make the fans feel safe and welcome to come back. We are going to be very conservative in our approach.”

Do you personally favor that everybody at the Cougars games, including fans, should be vaccinated?

Answer: “If the health officials tell us we need to have vaccines I am going to be in favor of that. If they tell us vaccines can be optional I am going to be in favor of that. My opinion does not matter on health matters.”

Are all the seats at CN Centre for sale or is there still a chance of reduced capacity?

Answer: “At this time we have not been given any information on reduced capacity.”

Are season ticket sales on par with normal years of the past for mid-August?
Answer: “They are pretty much on par with what we have had previously. The sense we are getting is that there is a real thirst and a real strong desire in our community to get back together again and celebrate normalcy.”
Do you have any final thoughts on the topic of vaccinations at Cougars games?
Answer: “The health experts are doing their best to make things good for us and to be able to get things back to normal. The fastest way we can get the Cougars back in business again is to listen to what the experts are telling us to do and to be good citizens and follow that.”

Los Angeles County will introduce a mask mandate, regardless of vaccination status, for large outdoor events over 10,000 people, including baseball games. So Dodgers fans can still go maskless after the 7th inning?

One way the Miami Marlins have historically tried to boost attendance is by body painting nude models during games. This puts a whole new spin on the top and bottom of an inning.
