Adopt a Family program sees an increase due to pandemic and rising food prices

The Prince George Salvation Army is looking for donors for their Adopt a Family program.

There are two weeks left to sign up, and Major Neil Wilkinson said they’ve already gathered over 400 families in need.

“We were bracing for a increase in the number of families and households that need support this Christmas, but we were a little bit overwhelmed by the numbers. So here we are halfway through the application process and we’ve already surpassed the number of Christmas hampers that we’ve supplied for last year.”

Wilkinson said the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as the increase in food prices has pushed those numbers up, but said he’s thankful for the generosity that he’s seen in Prince George.

He added that donors can sign up on their website before December 10th.

“The way the program works is that when we have an applicant apply for a Christmas hamper, then we try to match up that particular family or applicant with a donor who wants to meet that need.”

Wilkinson said he felt it was important to let the community know when the need was great in the city.

“We think it’s important that we communicate the reality that the Salvation Army is facing in trying to meet the increasing needs, because then we have the opportunity to continue to team up with the community to try to continue to meet those rising demands.”
