Olympics:

Canada has its fourth gold medal of the Beijing Olympics and it came in women’s hockey.

The Canadian team scored the first three goals and went on to a 3-2 triumph (Wednesday night PT) over the United States in the final.

Marie-Philip Poulin tallied twice and Ann-Renee Desbiens made 38 saves for Canada, who were outshot 40-21.

It is the fifth time Canada has won gold in women’s hockey at an Olympic Games.

Canada lost 3-2 to the Americans in a shootout in the championship game of the 2018 Olympics.

Marielle Thompson of Whistler won Canada’s 20th medal of the Olympics, earning a silver in the women’s ski cross final.

Canada’s Brad Gushue will play for Olympic bronze against the USA tonight (Thursday) at 10:05 PT in men’s curling after a 5-3 loss to Sweden in the semifinals.

In women’s Olympic curling, Jennifer Jones of Canada failed to make the playoffs after posting a 5-4 record.

Sarah Beaudry of Prince George and Emily Dickson of Burns Lake were part of the Canadian women’s 4 x 6 km Biathlon Olympic Relay team that finished in 10th place out of 20 on Wednesday. Canada finished four minutes and 30 seconds behind gold-medal winning Sweden.

Beaudry and Dickson have now completed their Olympic competition and are headed home.

Earlier at the Beijing Games, the 27-year-old Beaudry was 80th and Dickson 81st out of 89 in the women’s 7.5 km Sprint.

Dickson was also 70th and Beaudry 80th in the field of 87 in the women’s 15 km individual race.

In addition, Beaudry was part of the Canadian mixed 4 x 6 km Biathlon relay team that finished 14th out of 20.

Snowboarder Meryeta O’Dine returned home to Prince George Tuesday afternoon proudly displaying her two Olympic bronze medals.

The 24-year-old O’Dine combined with Eliot Grondin of Quebec for a third-place finish in the mixed team snowboard cross.

She also earned bronze in the women’s snowboard cross to become the first Prince George athlete to capture an Olympic medal.

WHL:

Prince George Cougars  5  Kelowna Rockets  2

Carter MacAdams notched a hat trick and Tyler Brennan made 44 saves to lead the Cougars, who snapped a five-game losing streak.

The Rockets outshot the Cats 46-28 before 3,400 fans Wednesday night at Prospera Place in Kelowna.

It was the first time in their last 11 games the Cougars have scored more than two goals.

Prince George is 3rd in the B.C. Division and 6th in the Western Conference, three points ahead of Vancouver with the (18-23-2) Giants holding four games in hand.

The (19-25-2-1) Cougars play the (26-12-1-3) Rockets again on Friday and Saturday at CN Centre.

Prince George is 4-17-1-1 against the top five teams in the Western Conference and 15-8-1-0 against the four teams below them in the Conference.

The Prince George Spruce Kings hit the road as they visit Salmon Arm Friday, Penticton Saturday and Vernon on Monday.

The (23-9-3-6) Spruce Kings have earned at least a point in each of their last 18 games.

They have not lost in regulation since December 18th when they fell 2-1 to the Vipers in Vernon.

Prince George is third in the Interior Division, four points ahead of the (25-13-1) West Kelowna Warriors.

Canada West basketball:

The UNBC Timberwolves host the UBC Thunderbirds tonight at 6:00 in Canada West women’s basketball.

The UNBC women are 6-7 on the season while UBC is 6-10.

On the men’s side, the (5-11) Timberwolves host the (9-9) Trinity Western Spartans Saturday afternoon at 3:00.

(U18 Male)

The U18 Cariboo Cougars visit the Valley West Giants Saturday morning at 11:30 and Sunday morning at 10 in Langley.

The (14-12-1-3) Cougars are 5th out of 10 teams while the (10-13-5) Giants are 7th,

The U17 Cariboo Cougars visit the Vancouver NE Chiefs Saturday afternoon at 3:00 and Sunday morning at 11:15 in Burnaby.

The (18-6-0-3) Capitals are second out of five teams while the (4-23-1) Comets are last.
