Former Cougars goalie to March with the Penguins

Mission accomplished.

After nearly five years in the Western Hockey League with the Prince George Cougars and Portland Winterhawks, Taylor Gauthier finally has a pathway into the NHL.

Today (Tuesday), he signed a three-year, entry-level contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Since being dealt to Portland on December 27th, Gauthier has tallied a 13-1-0-0 record with a 1.64 goals-against average and a .943 save percentage.

In addition, it didn’t take long for the 21-year-old to find his way into the Winterhawk record books as he set the franchise shutout minutes streak last month. Gauthier was originally selected by the Cougars with the 10th overall pick in the 2016 WHL Draft.

The Calgary product also captured a silver medal with Team Canada at the 2021 World Junior Hockey Championship.

In his return to PG, Gauthier picked up the win in a 7-2 drubbing over PG on Friday stopping 25 of 27 shots.
