Cougars late comeback falls short in Swift Current

While the PG Cougars didn’t get the win, they certainly made it interesting in last night’s (Saturday) 4-3 loss to the Swift Current Broncos.

The Cougars found themselves down 4-1 heading into the third period in front of 2,044 fans at the InnovationPlex in Swift Current.

Chase Wheatcroft and Hudson Thornton each scored in the final three minutes to bring the game within one.

However, the comeback fell short as the Broncos held on to win.

“You love the late surge, you love the fact we don’t quit and we pushed so hard and found a way to make it a real tight hockey game at the end and give ourselves a chance to win, but that urgency and that push needs to be there to start the hockey game,” said Cougars Associate Coach Josh Dixon on last night’s post-game show on 94.3 The Goat.

“You look at the shots, you look at the intensity Swift Current brought, they were the better team and they had us on our heels, we need to make sure we don’t repeat this script, the way we finish games needs to be the way we also start games.”

Ethan Samson also scored for the Cougars in the first period.

The Cougars (17-18-4-0) now sit second in the WHL’s BC Division behind the Kamloops Blazers (25-8-4-0).

The Cougars will continue their road trip through the prairies on Tuesday, with a matchup against the Medicine Hat Tigers.
