City to consider improved, protected bike lane network

Protected bike lanes could be on their way to Prince George.

At tonight’s (Wednesday) City Council meeting, Kyle Ross, the organizer of Safe Biking for Prince George, presented a pitch with possible improvements the city could make for cyclists.

Ross’ primary suggestion for the city was to implement protected, on-street bike lanes with delineator posts, curbs, and other mobile objects.

“These bike lanes can be easily adjusted with feedback,” he explained. “They can be rapidly expanded with less time between approval and being built. They can be installed on-site by city crews.”

With this, he added that protected bike lanes can be outright removed if it is shown one does not work in a certain location.

Ross also said improving the infrastructure for cyclists would be more environmentally friendly, and could save residents money in the long run.

“There is no alternative to driving in Prince George… which raises the minimum livable wage – which is $21.19 per hour in Prince George” he said.

Ross also added the average cost of a vehicle is $1000 per month, “which could be the difference between make or break for some people.”

“It is something residents are interested in improving,” Councilor Corey Ramsay said after the presentation. “I would be interested in exploring this more.”

She later put a motion forward to have the city’s Finance and Audit Department start to explore improvements to the biking network which passed unanimously.
