Hockey:

The Prince George Cougars will play just four pre-season games, none of them in PG.

The Cougars are in Port Coquitlam to face Vancouver on September 8th and Victoria on the 9th.

They also have a pair of exhibition games in Grande Cache, Alberta, both against Edmonton on September 15th and 17th.

Grande Cache is 580 kilometres east of Prince George.

The Cougars open their WHL regular season with a pair of home games at CN Centre against the Tri-City Americans on September 22nd and 23rd.

The full WHL regular season schedule will be released today (Tuesday).

The NHL awards were handed out last night and Connor McDavid won his third Hart Trophy as NHL MVP.

McDavid also won the Ted Lindsay Award as the NHL’s most outstanding player as voted by his peers.

San Jose’s Erik Karlsson won the Norris Trophy as the top defenseman.

Seattle’s Matty Beniers won the Calder Trophy as rookie of the year.

The Boston Bruins Patrice Bergeron won the Selke Award as the best defensive forward, goaltender Linus Ullmark was awarded the Vezina Trophy as top goalie and coach Jim Montgomery won the Jack Adams Award as coach of the year.

The Boston Bruins cleared cap space by trading former Hart Trophy winner Taylor Hall to the Chicago Blackhawks in a four-player deal.

Round one of the NHL Draft will be held Wednesday night in Nashville with rounds 2-7 to follow on Thursday.

In the final Central Scouting rankings, Riley Heidt of the P.G. Cougars is listed 21st among North American skaters, Koehn Ziemmer of the Cougars is 25th, PG’s Nico Myatovic of the Seattle Thunderbirds is 26th and McBride’s Tanner Molendyk of the Saskatoon Blades is 28th.

The Prince George Spruce Kings are moving up their Saturday home games one hour earlier and will start at 6:00 p.m. in the 2023-24 BCHL season.

Fastball:

26 teams from all over Western Canada will participate in the John Cho Cup fastball tournament in Prince George.

Games will take place at the Spruce City Stadium starting Friday at 4:00 p.m. and concluding with the final Sunday afternoon at 3:30.

The tournament consists of 13 teams in the men’s division, seven in U23 and six in the women’s.

Major League Baseball:

The (43-36) Toronto Jays host the (44-34) San Francisco Giants tonight (Tuesday  4:07 PT)
to begin a 3-game series.

The Jays are 2-1 on a 9-game homestand.

The playoffs will begin Wednesday night at 8:00 with the Bandits against the Assault.

The (3-0) B.C. Lions visit the (2-0) Toronto Argonauts on Monday (4:00 PM PT).

Week 4 of the CFL season starts Friday with (0-3) Edmonton at (0-2) Ottawa (4:30 PT).
