Major League Baseball:

The Chicago Cubs have called up infielder Jared Young of Prince George from their Triple-A farm club in Iowa.

The 27-year-old Young is batting .326 with 13 home runs and 45 RBIs in 52 games this season in the minors.

This is the second time Young has been called up to MLB Cubs in his six-year professional baseball career.

He appeared in six games last season for Chicago.

The (43-37) Jays are 2-2 on a 9-game homestand which continues tonight (Wednesday 4:07 PT) against the (45-34) Giants.

Hockey:

The Prince George Cougars will play 24 of their 34 home games on a weekend; 11 on Fridays, 10 on Saturdays, two on Sundays and one on a holiday Monday (Feb 19th).

The WHL released its 2023-24 regular season schedule Tuesday afternoon.

The Cougars also have four games at CN Centre on Tuesdays, four on Wednesdays, one on a Thursday and one on a non-holiday Monday.

They start their season with seven of nine at home beginning September 22nd against Tri-City.

The PG Cougars will play just four pre-season games, none of them in PG. The Cougars have a couple of exhibitions in Port Coquitlam on September 8th and 9th and two more in Grande Cache, Alberta, on September 15th and 17th.

Grande Cache is 580 kilometres east of Prince George.

The NHL Draft begins tonight (Wednesday) in Nashville with 32 players to be picked in the opening round.

This will be followed by rounds 2-7 on Thursday.

In the final Central Scouting rankings, Riley Heidt of the P.G. Cougars is listed 21st among North American skaters, Koehn Ziemmer of the Cougars is 25th, PG’s Nico Myatovic of the Seattle Thunderbirds is 26th and McBride’s Tanner Molendyk of the Saskatoon Blades is 28th.

Fastball:

The John Cho Cup fastball tournament will be featured on the long weekend at the Spruce City Stadium and Carrie Jane Grey Park in PG.

Games start Friday at 4:00 p.m. and conclude with the final Sunday afternoon around 3:30.

26 teams from all over Western Canada have confirmed their participation.

The tournament consists of 13 teams in the men’s division, seven in U23 and six in the women’s.

 

PG Senior Lacrosse:

The best-of-3 semifinals in Prince George Senior Lacrosse will begin tonight (Wednesday).

The 2nd place PG Bandits face the 3rd place PG Assault at 8:00 at Kin 1.

The other semi between the unbeaten PG Devils and Mackenzie will start on Tuesday.

Soccer:

Canada and Guadeloupe ran to a 2-2 draw in the opener of the CONCACAF Gold Cup at BMO Field in Toronto. The 16-country tournament runs through July 16 across 15 stadiums in 14 cities.

 

CFL:

Week 4 of the CFL season kicks off with a pair of winless teams on Friday: (0-3) Edmonton at (0-2) Ottawa (4:30 PT).

The (3-0) B.C. Lions visit the (2-0) Toronto Argonauts on Monday (4:00 PM PT).
