Today, (Wednesday) they got their wish.
An anonymous donor cut an $18,000 cheque to help fund the November 11th event.
“I was in tears, frankly,” said Branch Chairman Sheldon Clare.
“That wasn’t the only person who stepped up to make some donations. We’ve had other’s who’ve open their wallets and helped out with the funding.”
Clare added the City is taking steps to reduce the costs for the event.
“It goes to show the community actually cares,” he said.
“It’s a good place to live with good people, who are concerned about Remembrance and are concerned about the sacrifices veterans and soldiers have made on behalf of Canada, and recognize it’s important their family members and their friends are recognized annually. It’s quite touching.”
According to Clare, some of the larger expenses around the Remembrance Day event are providing hot dogs and hot chocolate for youth, printing programs, and renting a sound system.
Clare added he’s hoping to have a large contingent of veterans marching in the parade this year.
“To show people they’re there, and to demonstrate our community that we do have veterans and they’re not really all that old anymore.”
“It’s time to see that younger generation of veterans come out and be recognized for their valuable service.”
