WHL:

Portland Winterhawks  10  Everett Silvertips  2

The victory moved the (36-12-2-1) Winterhawks three points ahead of the Prince George Cougars in the race for first place in the Western Conference.

Portland has 17 games remaining and P.G. has 16 to go.

The Winterhawks are also two points ahead of the (35-18-1-2) Silvertips in the U.S. Division and Everett has just a dozen games left.

The (35-15-0-2) Cougars have four games coming up in five days against the two bottom teams in the Conference.

They have a home and home against the (16-30-3-2) Blazers, Friday in Prince George and Saturday in Kamloops.

The Cougars also entertain the (18-30-2) Seattle Thunderbirds on Monday at 3 PM and Tuesday night at 7:30.

Sniper Zac Funk will be shooting for his 50th goal of the season this weekend.

The 20-year-old Funk leads the WHL in goals with 49 which is five shy of the PG Cougars team record of 54 set by Quinn Hancock in the 1997-98 season.

The Prince George Spruce Kings head to Vancouver Island this week.

The Spruce Kings visit the (21-17-0-1) Victoria Grizzlies on Friday, the (11-25-2-1) Cowichan Valley Capitals on Saturday and the (24-14-1) Alberni Valley Bulldogs on Monday afternoon.

With 15 regular season games remaining, the (13-23-3) Spruce Kings are last in the 8-team Interior Division, three points behind the (14-22-3-1) Merritt Centennials.

BC Elite Hockey League:

The U18 Cariboo Cougars put a six-game winning streak on the line when they conclude their BC Elite Hockey League regular season with a doubleheader at Fraser Valley on Feb. 24th and 25th.

The (26-6-2) U18 Cougars are in second place, two points behind the (26-4-2-2) Vancouver North East Chiefs and one point ahead of the (26-5-1) Fraser Valley Thunderbirds.

Canada West basketball:

The UNBC Timberwolves are preparing for the playoffs in men’s Canada West basketball after finishing with a 9-11 record in the regular season.

The UNBC men will play on Wednesday, Feb 21st in Winnipeg.

The UNBC women finished 14th out of 17 teams with a 4-16 record and missed the playoffs.
