Three community members are being recognized for their leadership in bringing inclusiveness into the classroom.
The Diversity project, which teaches students about equality, recognized Franca Petrucci, Michelle Marrelli and Bonnie Chappell for helping to establish the program back in 2001.
“14 years ago this wasn’t politically correct and it wasn’t part of societal norms, and it needed to be” said Marelli.
Despite greater social acceptance in Prince George today, Marrelli says it’s important to continue educating the next generation.
“We need to be supporting and celebrating. Whether it’s gay and lesbian or mental wellness, we need to be talking about these things” said Marrelli. “It’s through education that we get rid of the fear, get rid of the bullying and make sure we are creating a safer community.”
Since diversity was introduced, similiar programs have spread to other communities around the province.
