Following the Northwood Pulp Mill closure announcement, the Northern Innovation Network is hoping people will take a chance on starting a business of their own.
The Build Your Own Future program is an opportunity for those that have been downsized or hours curtailed to take their side gig or idea to start their own business, accessing training, and a grant based on completion stages.
Director of Business Development, Shannon Stange said the idea of the cohort based program is to get entrepreneurs launched.
“It’s a five day boot camp that they start off with. After that boot camp, you meet certain metrics, and then you get your first $2,500 grant.”
“After the completion of seven capacity building workshops over the next seven months, you get another $2,500.”
Since the program’s start, Stange said they’ve had a number of entrepreneurs from P.G., Vanderhoof, and Smithers where forestry is king, become a key area for businesses being launched.
While being headquartered in P.G., the program has also been supporting people across the province, including around Vancouver Island after its mill closure.
