Bear season hasn’t quite come to a close, as the Northern Bear Awareness Society is reminding residents to keep managing attractants.
President Nicole Botten said the number of bear-human conflicts will fluctuate, with this year being on the quiet side, as there was good natural food crop in the woods and forest cut blocks.
That said, Botten noted that there were quite a few reports of people seeing bears in neighbourhoods.
“We did have quite a number of bears that are almost always living in and around our community.”
“There were lots of people reporting and posting on social media of bears around, but not so much getting into garbage as usual or fruit trees.”
Botten said there was a good apple removal effort this year by the gleaning abundance program, with the Northern Lights Estate Winery taking in fruits to turn into wine.
The bear season is expected to continue for another month or so, or until there’s a good amount of snow on the ground.
Until then, Botten said the main thing is to continue to be responsible with garbage by either keeping it indoors, strapped, or locked up.
