“I think Prince George will be fine.” Yu reflects on his time as mayor

Prince George will soon have a new Mayor, but until then, Simon Yu will be taking in the remaining few days.

Yu, who spent one term in the City’s top seat after being elected in 2022, said one of his and council’s best achievements was bringing together different levels of government to tackle local issues.

“The Regional District, Lheidli T’enneh, federal, provincial, and the civic governments signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to be willing to work together on economic issues, on multiple issues regarding public safety regardless of party lines.”

“I think that itself is an accomplishment.”

On a personal level, Yu is proud of breaking down barriers in becoming a Mayor as a first generation immigrant from Hong Kong in a community that doesn’t have a strong Chinese population.

As to what what could’ve been done better, Yu touched on social problems, as well as families in need, noting the number of families needing food hampers going up from around 1,300 to 2,500 within his term.

Looking ahead to the new Council, he has a lot of confidence in what they will be able to do.

“I think the new council brings a tremendous amount of technical know-how and wealth of experience, whether its in agriculture, planning, advocacy for the people.” said Yu. “I wish I was still there to be part of it, but having said that, I think Prince George will be fine.”

Down the road, Yu is waiting for his next opportunity to present itself, but in the meantime, he’ll be spending time with family.
