BC Highway Patrol (BCHP) are reminding drivers to follow the rules of the road after catching two excessive speeders in Prince George.
Police say the speeders were caught by officers in ghost cars, with both incidents in construction zones.
The first incident was on Thursday, October 1st, at about 5:40 p.m., on Highway 97 North (Hart Highway), where a 36-year-old man from Harrison Mills driving a white Dodge Ram 3500 was stopped by a ghost cruiser, after radar showed at a speed of 121 km/h in a 50 zone.
On October 2nd, at 8:40 p.m., on Highway 97 South near Pollard Road, a green Honda SUV driven by a 22-year-old Surrey man was stopped by a ghost cruiser when radar showed a reading of 123 km/h in a 50 zone.
BCHP said he was also a Novice driver who was served a 3-month driving prohibition for previous driving offences.
Sergeant Michael McLaughlin said speeding within construction zones are an ongoing problem in the north.
“Remember those maintenance workers have a job. It’s really uncomfortable for people to be going by at such a high speed, and it’s very dangerous.”
“We’re asking people to take a look in the mirror and slow yourself down when you see those construction zones.”
They add both drivers received an excessive speed fine of $483, the cost of a tow truck and a seven-day impound (at the owner’s expense) and at least three years of high-risk driver premiums and escalating insurance that will bring the total costs to at least $2,300.
The Surrey driver also received a $109 fine for Failing to display “N”.
McLaughlin added ghost cars are something they’ve been shifting towards lately in highway patrol to better find drivers who aren’t paying attention.
He said as long as drivers focus on good driving, they wont have to worry about them.
